The DSLR is different from a conventional point-and-shoot camera in the following ways:
1) It has a much larger, and a higher quality image sensor. This gives it a very high sensitivity to light. Because of the larger sensor, you can shoot better images in low light conditions without using the flash.
2) There is only one lens for both viewing/framing your shot and for taking the photograph. This ensures that what you see through the viewfinder is exactly what you get in the final photograph.
3) A DSLR has far better optics (lenses), which are better at collecting light and creating an image on the sensor.
You also have the option of buying additional lenses, adapters, filters and additional flashguns for specific purposes. In that way, the DSLR can grow and adapt with your photography skills.
4) A DSLR also has better photo processing circuitry and advanced image processing algorithms which gives it speed, and better handling of images.
The only downside is a larger size. It is better to go for a DSLR which can take video and you will be surprised at the high quality HD video that a DSLR takes (once again, thanks to the large sensor and high quality optics).
If you have an LCD or Plasma TV, you can take video, connect the camera using HDMI and enjoy HD video directly.
